Mr Charles Hendrickse

Mr Charles Hendrickse graduated from Liverpool Medical School in 1984.  He completed his basic surgical training in the Mersey region and moved to the West Midlands in 1987 where he completed his higher surgical training in General and Colorectal Surgery.  He was awarded a Sheldon Research Fellowship for his research into colorectal cancer, which led to an MD from the University of Birmingham in 1996.  He was a visiting fellow at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York where he studied the treatment of early and advanced colorectal cancer.  He was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in 1997.  He is a Fellow and examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Honorary Senior Lecturer of the University of Birmingham and a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.  He is the West Midlands Chapter representative for the Association and currently represents West Midland colorectal surgeons at the council of the Association.

His specialist interest is in the surgical management of colorectal disease.  He is the clinical lead for colorectal surgery and is a core member of the multidisciplinary teams managing patients with colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease at his trust.  He also offers multidisciplinary assessment and treatment for various pelvic floor problems such as faecal incontinence, obstructive defecation, rectal prolapse and rectocele.  He is a trained laparoscopic surgeon.

Mr Hendrickse manages the full range of benign ano-rectal problems such as piles, fistula-in-ano, pilonidal disease and anal fissures.  He offers the modern techniques for the management of haemorrhoidal disease (piles), which include the stapled haemorrhoidectomy (PPH) and haemorrhoidal artery ligation techniques (HALO and THD)

He is a trained colonoscopist and provides diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy for management of benign and malignant diseases on the colon and rectum.

Mr Hendrickse offers expertise in the management of various general surgical problems such as hernia surgery (umbilical, groin and incisional hernias) and the removal of lumps and bumps.
