Mr Douglas M Bowley

Training and experience

Douglas Bowley is a military surgeon who was first appointed as Honorary Consultant to the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in 2005.  As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps, Mr Bowley has regularly deployed in support of British troops worldwide. Douglas qualified in 1990 at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, and has subsequently enjoyed a broad training in surgery both within the UK and overseas, gaining experience in general surgery in the South West and colorectal sub-speciality training at Oxford and St. Marks Hospital, London. During his training, he undertook fellowships in trauma surgery and general paediatric surgery in South Africa. Douglas is an enthusiastic trainer of junior surgeons and has a notable track record of contribution to the surgical academic literature.

Areas of expertise

Mr Bowley has special interests across the full range of general, colorectal surgery and general paediatric surgery.  The bulk of his elective practice involves treating patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease [such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis]. He has an active interest in laparoscopic [minimally invasive] colorectal surgery and is a JAG-accredited colonoscopist. As well as comprehensive treatments for pelvic floor dysfunction, perianal sepsis and fistula he offers THD [haemorrhoidal artery ligation] as a minimally invasive treatment for haemorrhoids [piles]. Mr Bowley provides the full range of surgical treatments for inguinal, umbilical, epigastric, incisional and parastomal hernia.

Medicolegal services

He is the Consultant Adviser in Surgery to the Director General of the Army Medical Service. Mr Bowley has medicolegal experience in the field of professional negligence, surgical mishaps/accidents and personal injury. Experienced with Legal Aid, Douglas provides a rapid and comprehensive medicolegal report writing service and has courtroom experience as an expert. Mr Bowley is an expert concerning team working, communication and overall quality and safety in healthcare and is lead for governance in surgery for his Trust. On behalf of his Trust, he has led numerous Serious Untoward Incident investigations resulting in systemic change within the organisation.
