THD (Transanal haemorrhoidal dearterialisation)

THD is a non-excisional surgical technique for the treatment of piles, similar to HALO (Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation Operation).
The goal of THD is to eliminate the symptoms of haemorrhoids without the need to surgically excise [cut off] the piles.
The operation uses a miniature doppler ultrasound device to locate all the blood vessels supplying the haemorrhoids.  The surgeon then places a stitch around the blood vessel, thus interrupting the blood supply to the piles.  Further stitches are placed to pull any excess haemorrhoidal tissue back up into the anal canal.  Once all the blood vessels supplying the piles have been tied off the piles shrink away and the symptoms resolve.

The procedure is generally a lot more comfortable than conventional haemorrhoidectomy, in which the piles are surgically excised.  Most patients would be expected to return to normal activities within 24-48 hours of treatment.
